Committee awards 29 Petree Grants

Written: 11/6/2009

The Petree Grant committee met in early October to review a record number of grant applications: 38 requests, from nearly every district in Oklahoma.

The committee awarded funds totaling more than $174,000 to 29 churches, ministries, and Conference agencies. Some of those receiving grants are highlighted below.

  • Delaware United Methodist Church, a rural congregation in Bartlesville District, will use its grant for Bible Zone, an after-school program in the community. Across eight years, the program has grown from serving 15 children to more than 34, and primarily ministers to lower-income families.
  • Marietta First United Methodist Church will use its grant to launch a new program, Celebrate Recovery, and to begin offering the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-Step Program. The church in Ardmore District hopes to reach out to people affected by addiction in the community and surrounding areas.
  • Skyline Urban Ministry in south Oklahoma City received a grant for Clothes for Kids. This outreach program provides children with new clothes, uniforms, and shoes at the start of the school year. The grant will be particularly used to sustain Skyline’s supply of clothing throughout the school year, helping children who outgrow their clothes. The Clothes for Kids program serves 1,500 children each school year.

Petree Grant applications are available in the summer, and those requests must be submitted by September of each year to the Oklahoma United Methodist Foundation.
